Humera Agricultural Research Center (HuARC) organized a two-day sesame commodity national research review meeting from January 20-30, 2015 at Mekelle.
32 participants attended the meeting. Attendees were from Humera, Gondar, Alamata, Maytsebri-shire, Asosa, Melkawerer Agricultural Research Centres, Haromaya and Axum Universities, Tigray Agricultural Research Institute, Tigray Region Bureau of Agriculture (TRBoA) and SBN Support Programme.
In the first day, researchers from different research centres presented completed, on-going and new sesame related research activities and discussions were made after the presentations.
In the second day of the meeting, the SBN Support Programme representatives, Mr. Hagos Tadesse and Mr. Andualem Tadesse presented the action research works conducted by the Support Programme. They also presented the scaling-up activity that the Programme run, together with Tigray and Amhara Region Bureaues of Agriculture and Research Institutes, last production season.
Mr. Fisseha Bezabih, TRBoA deputy director, indicated the importance of research to improve the productivity and quality of sesame. He stressed that agricultural growth without the support of research is impossible.
The meeting gives chance to discuss on the overall strategic issues such as capacitating research centres by improving their logistics and human resource and strengthening collaboration between the centres production of sesame with irrigation, soil and water management.
HUARC is the national centre of excellence for sesame research.
