The first Benefit-SBN advisory board meeting was held on the 2nd of March 2017 at Addis Ababa. The meeting was held with the objective of exchanging on SBN stakeholders’ and Benefit-SBN achievements and lessons learnt in 2016; discussing key challenges and strategic issues for 2017 and beyond; and formulating guidelines and action points for improving performance in 2017.
The meeting started with Dr. Geremew Terefe’s presentation on the achievements and lessons learnt
in 2016 followed by Ted Schrader’s presentation of 10 key strategic issues for the improvement of the sesame sector. During and after the two presentations, the strategic issues were discussed, focal points were suggested and action points were defined. Among the strategic issues, priority was given to kebele planning, machinery and mechanisation, national sesame business platform, rural finance and integrated soil fertility management.
Advisory board committee members, who become focal persons for different activities promised to follow up and act on the action points.
14 committee members from Amhara Region Agricultural Research Institute (ARARI) and Gondar Agricultural Research Centre (GARC), Tigray Region Agricultural Research Institute and Humera Agricultural Research Centre (HuARC), Tigray Bureau of Agriculture (BoA) and Benefit- SBN attended the one day meeting.
Participants decided to organise the next advisory board meeting on September 2017.
